Professional and Personal Q&A with Dr Richard Rawson:
Why did you become an Ophthalmologist?
“Ophthalmology had potential for me to work, benefitting Australians in remote areas and locally, as well as overseas.”
What is your favourite procedure and why?
“My favourite procedure, locally, is helping patients with Macular Degeneration, through injections and, of course where necessary, suggestions how to cope with the associated limitations to sight.
I also classify Vision impaired athletes worldwide, to enable them to compete in Vision impaired sport. This facilitates them to participate.”
Was there an important person in the field of Ophthalmology that inspired you?
“Fred Hollows was my main mentor. He taught in a challenging way, but we learnt through fear and example.”
Do you have an unforgettable work experience or a memorable patient story?
“Doing Surgery overseas on essentially blind people and teaching surgical techniques, restoring sight after cataract surgery has produced tears and joy with patients and often myself.”
What are your hobbies or what do you enjoy doing outside of work?
“Minor sport participation and Gardening. Being as good a Grandparent as I can be.”
