Professional and Personal Q&A with Dr H. Kwon Kang:

Why did you become an Ophthalmologist?

“I was inspired by a mentor and was hooked when I watched laser being used to treat eye conditions. Reminded me of Star Wars.”

What is your favourite procedure and why?

“Retinal detachment repair: This is an emergency surgery that truly saves patients from blindness.”

Was there an important person in the field of Ophthalmology that inspired you?

“I have been, and still am, inspired by a lifelong mentor, who is a retinal specialist.”

Do you have an unforgettable work experience or a memorable patient story?

“The most memorial moments, and there have been many, were during volunteer work in Myanmar. A patient who had surgery and vision restored didn’t come for postoperative visit. She went shopping instead.”

What are your hobbies or what do enjoy doing outside of work?

“I have been a graphic artist outside ophthalmology. I enjoy playing guitar and also can sing a little.”
